How to plan for the perfect retirement #5 Prevention is better than Cure

Blog

Healthcare is expensive, so it makes sense to remain active and healthy as long as possible.  Its advisable to follow a low carb, low fat diet supplemented with fresh fruit and vegetables; to remain active mentally by reading, playing bridge or Sudoku, socialising regularly, and taking up new hobbies; and to adopt an age-appropriate exercise programme – walking and swimming, and core strengthening activities like yoga and Pilates are all excellent ways to keep fit in later years.

If you’re planning to downsize to a retirement village, remember to take a good look at the communal facilities and activities on offer first. Does the village have a gym, for example? An indoor heated pool? Bowling green or Petanque court? Walking and cycling tracks? Do they offer exercise and keep fit classes? And is there a good line up of communal activities on offer that will keep you entertained, socially connected, and mentally stimulated?  You’ll have plenty time on your hands when you retire so having access to facilities and activities of this nature will go a long way to ensuring that you truly enjoy your golden years.
