World Move for Health Day 2019

Blog

Do you get enough physical activity on a daily basis? If the answer is ‘no’, you may want to set yourself some exercise goals on World Move for Health Day. This fitness-focused health awareness day is a World Health Organization initiative that falls on 10 May each year and aims to “promote physical activity as essential for health and well-being.”

Why is exercise so important?

Regular physical activity has a broad range of benefits for body and mind. Here’s a closer look at just three of its positive effects.

1.  Improves energy levels. Ever noticed that you feel more energised after working up a sweat? There are plenty of studies which point to the energy-boosting effects of exercise, so why not try going for a walk the next time you feel in need of a mid-afternoon pick-me-up?

2. Helps you maintain a healthy weight. It should come as no surprise that exercise is a great tool in weight control. If you’re trying to lose a few kilos or maintain your weight, try to do some form of physical activity on a regular basis. Experts recommend aiming for about 30 minutes a day, but remember that every bit counts – whether that’s doing some housework, gardening or going for a short walk.

3. Helps reduce your risk of certain diseases. According to the American Diabetes Association, physical activity “lowers your risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.” And the World Cancer Day campaign states that “regular physical activity not only helps to reduce excess body fat and the cancer risks associated with this, but being physically active can help to reduce the risks of developing colon, breast and endometrial cancers.”

What about exercise options?

It’s a good idea to chat to your healthcare provider before upping your activity levels or starting a new exercise programme. If you’re looking for ways to be more active, here are a few options to consider.

  • Water aerobics – a low-impact cardio workout
  • Yoga – a relaxing and energising way to increase flexibility
  • Pilates – a low-impact way to build core strength
  • Tai Chi – a gentle Chinese martial art
  • Running – a good aerobic workout
