Winter safety tips for older adults

Blog

Haul out your warmest clothes and cosiest blankets, because winter is officially here. And as the wet, cold weather sets in, it’s worth taking extra care to ensure you stay safe and warm this season. Here are a few winter safety tips to bear in mind.

1. Dress for the occasion

Depending on where you live in the country, you can experience four seasons in one day. So dress in layers that you can take off or put back on depending on the weather. Scarves, beanies and gloves are always a good choice on cold winter days – and remember to wear comfy shoes with a good grip if you’re heading out in the rain.

2. Be prepared

Keep a rain jacket, umbrella and torch in your car in case the weather changes while you’re out and about or you get back home a little later than expected. Take extra care on wet pavements and walkways, and try to avoid going out in very bad weather.

3. Keep warm

Keep a few comfy blankets around the house, so you can snuggle up and stay warm while watching TV or reading. Also have one or two extra blankets in your bedroom that you can put on or take off depending on the temperature.

4. Be safety conscious

If you’re using a space heater to warm up a room, place it in an area away from flammable items like curtains and bedding. And don’t leave it unattended – make sure that you switch it off and unplug it when you leave the room or go to bed.

5. Have your car checked

If you haven’t had your car serviced in a while, you may want to book it in to ensure that everything is in good working order. Remember to have your tyres checked and make sure that your windscreen wipers work properly.
