Do card games really boost your brainpower?

Blog

Have you ever played bridge, canasta or cribbage? These aren’t merely fun and games – they probably help to boost your mental game too. Alzheimer’s Research UK cites a study that found people who engaged in mentally stimulating activities like card games and puzzles were more likely to have larger brain volumes and score better in memory and thinking tests.

But card games aren’t only worthwhile intellectual pursuits – they’re also great ways of connecting socially. You can see why there are so many bridge enthusiasts and devoted card players among our Evergreen residents. It’s enjoyable to spend time with friends and meet new people, and social engagement has been shown to have significant health benefits.

A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2015 found that regular face-to-face interactions with friends and family help reduce the risk of depression in older adults. And according to the Mayo Clinic, building and maintaining healthy friendships can contribute to an increased sense of purpose and belonging, boost happiness levels and help to reduce stress.

Building vibrant communities

Evergreen Lifestyle villages offer residents plenty of opportunities to connect – from social events to clubs and special-interest groups. The Lifestyle Centres at the heart of our villages typically have open-plan lounges, spacious communal areas and dedicated games rooms, where residents can join in regular card games or get together around shared hobbies and interests.

Other games

If you’re not a keen cardplayer, or there aren’t any playing partners around, you can still give your brain a workout.

  1. Crosswords – These addictive word puzzles are a universal favourite. Keep challenging yourself by trying progressively more difficult ones.
  2. Sudoku – The popular numbers game that comes in varying levels, offering something for everyone.
  3. Board games – From Scrabble and chess to 30 Seconds and Trivial Pursuit, boardgames are the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
  4. Jigsaw puzzles – You can build them online, but there’s nothing like the real thing, and many profess to having a long-standing love affair with them.
