Healthy breakfast options for older adults

Blog

Tired of the same breakfast, day after day? Here are seven healthy and delicious options that are guaranteed to add flavour and variety to your breakfast.

1. Oatmeal with berries
There’s nothing quite like a comforting bowl of oatmeal and it’s a great option for cold winter mornings. If you’d like to add a fresh burst of flavour to this breakfast favourite, toss in a handful of blueberries or chopped strawberries.

2. Scrambled eggs on toast
Eggs are affordable, rich in vitamins and minerals and a good source of protein, so it’s not surprising that they form the basis of many classic breakfasts. One of the simplest ways to enjoy them is scrambled on whole grain toast with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

3. Yoghurt with fruit and nuts
This is the perfect breakfast when you feel like something light and creamy. Simply add your favourite nuts and chopped fruit to a bowl of plain, unsweetened yogurt, drizzle with honey, and enjoy.

4. Cottage cheese and tomato toast
Simply spread chunky or smooth cottage cheese onto two slices of rye or whole grain toast, add a few slices of tomato, and sprinkle chopped spring onion on top.

5. Fruit smoothie
Smoothies are a versatile breakfast and there are plenty of easy recipes available online. The only equipment you need is a blender, so get creative and experiment with different flavour combinations until you find your favourites.

6. Avocado toast
Not only are avocados creamy and delicious, they’re also a good source of fibre, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals. Once you’ve assembled your avocado toast, finish it off with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of salt and pepper.

7. Whole grain toast with almond or macadamia butter
This is a great choice if you’re heading off early and need a quick breakfast before you leave. Whole grain bread is a good source of fibre, while nut butters add protein to the meal.
